Cannes Film Festival 2015 (13th to 24th of May) : SF&F Films

The 68th annual Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to be held from 13 to 24 May 2015. Joel and Ethan Coen have been announced as the Presidents of the Jury for the main competition.

The festival poster features Hollywood star and Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman, photographed by David Seymour. The poster was chosen to pay tribute to Bergman for her contributions to films and who also served as the Jury President at 1973 Cannes Film Festival. As part of the tribute to Bergman, the Swedish documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words will be featured in the Cannes Classics section.

French actor Lambert Wilson has been announced as the host for the opening and closing ceremonies.

The Official Selection of films for the 2015 festival, including the line-up for the Main Competition, was announced on 16 April 2015.

“The Lobster” by Yorgos Lanthimos

“The Lobster” is an upcoming science fiction romantic comedy-drama film directed by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos in his English-language debut. Its script was awarded the ARTE International Prize for Best CineMart 2013 Project at the 42nd Rotterdam International Film Festival. Set in a dystopian near future, the film tells an unconventional love story where finding a partner is a matter of life and death. The film stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, Olivia Colman, Léa Seydoux and John C. Reilly. It has been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

The Lobster” by the greek film director Yorgos Lanthimos and “Il racconto dei racconti” (Tale of Tales) of the italian director Matteo Garrone are competing for the Palme d’Or (with other 17 films) as announced at a press conference on 16 April 2015.

“Il racconto dei racconti” (Tale of Tales) by Matteo Garrone

“Tale of Tales” (Il racconto dei racconti) is directed by the Italian film director Matteo Garrone, starring Salma Hayek, Vincent Cassel, Toby Jones and John C Reilly. It is loosely based on stories from the 17th-century fairytale collection “Il racconto dei racconti”, compiled by Giambattista Basile. The film was an Italian-led production with co-producers in France and the United Kingdom. It was Garrone’s first English-language film. It has been selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.

“Mad Max. Fury Road “ by George Miller (greek origin director Yorgos Milliotis)

“Mad Max: Fury Road” is a 2015 Australian post-apocalyptic SF action film directed, produced, and co-written by George Miller, and the fourth film of Miller’s “Mad Max franchise”. The first film of the franchise in 30 years, “Fury Road” stars Tom Hardy as “Mad” Max Rockatansky, making it also the first Mad Max film not to feature Mel Gibson in the title role. The film also stars Charlize Theron.

“The Little Prince” by  Mark Osborne  

 “The Little Prince” (Le Petit Prince) is an upcoming English-language French computer-animated fantasy film directed by Mark Osborne. Irena Brignull wrote the script based on the 1943 novel of the same name by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry.

As the first animated feature film adaptation of “The Little Prince”, the film uses stop motion animation for the novel’s story and computer animation for an additional frame narrative. The film stars the voices of Jeff Bridges, Rachel McAdams, Paul Rudd, Marion Cotillard, James Franco, Benicio del Toro, Ricky Gervais, Bud Cort, Paul Giamatti, Albert Brooks and Mackenzie Foy. It will have its world premiere on 22 May 2015 at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in an out-of-competition screening, followed by a wide theatrical release in France on 29 July 2015.

“Macbeth” is an upcoming British drama film directed by Justin Kurzel and written by Jacob Koskoff, Todd Louiso and Michael Lesslie, based on William Shakespeare’s play of the same name. The film stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Sean Harris, Paddy Considine, Elizabeth Debicki, and David Thewlis.
