Amat Escalante’s SF Film “La Región Salvaje”

The SF Film “La Región Salvaje” (The Savage Region/international title : “The Untamed”) by the Mexican Film Director Amat Escalante

This sly and subversive allegorical SF body horror from the Mexican director of ‘Heli’ is about the universal drives and addictions that power us all through life.”

La Región Salvaje” (The Untamed):
The Silver Lion Award at the 2016 Venice International Film Festival/La 73ª edizione della Mostra internazionale d’arte cinematografica di Venezia

(Nominations: The Golden Lion Award, The Grand Jury Prize, The Best Screenplay Award, Volpi Cup for Best Actress)

Amat Escalante is the director who made a considerable splash at Cannes in 2013 with ‘Heli’, a brutal slice of working-class life in narcoterrorist Mexico, which won him the Cannes Best Director Award.

Now Escalante is back with a follow-up,– though its original title is “La Región Salvaje” (The Savage Region), which seems to fit better its mysterious, elliptical narrative.

A perplexing opening sequence, showing what appears to be a vast asteroid heading for Earth, lays the foundation for the film’s strange premise.
The asteroid has brought with it a new life form which its elderly discoverers – retired people who live in a modest woodland shack – find it necessary to keep secret, rather like Mr. and Mrs. Kent when the baby Superman arrived.

But it’s never clear what it actually is, though it might’ve been spawned by an extraterrestrial entity possibly also involved in the strange goings-on in films such as Andrzej Zulawski’s ‘Possession’ and Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Under the Skin’.

This movie has the spirit of Buñuel in many ways, also Guillermo del Toro, and maybe even Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’.”
